ROMFA and Kinetic Art Resource Guide

(update in progress July 2007)

This is a list of resources compiled to help the kinetic/electronic artist do their thing.  It is by no means complete, but it is pretty extensive, and new things are added when we find them. Ask us about any particular one, or ask where you might find something you need that isn't listed here…chances are we'll have a resource.

While some of these books are out of print, They are usually available for purchase, used, online.

A very good source for finding any used and/or out of print book is Bookfinder.com.

Where possible, the "BUY" link above will take you to a bookfinder.com search.

Another great source for books on electronics and mechanics is RobotBooks.com.

Catalogs, Parts Sources
McMaster-Carr - The grand-daddy of supply houses. There isn't much made that they don't carry. You can often beat their price, but rarely their selection. McMaster-Carr
Stock Drive Products/Sterling Instruments - excellent supplier for gears, chains, sprockets, couplings, and such. Their set of catalogs is free, and is a wonderful set of resource books. Their prices are pretty good for a lot of their stock, especially as far as new stuff goes. SDP/SI
SECS - Another supplier like SDP/SI. I have never ordered from them so I don't know about their prices. SECS
Thomas Register - Power Transmission Couplings - a list of companies who sell power transmission products. Couplings-EZ
Grainger - a national supplier of electrical, electromechanical, and industrial parts. Grainger
Reid Tool - Handles, knobs, levers, feet, clamps, fittings, fasteners Reid Tool

Jameco - Fantastic supplier of electronic and electromechanical supplies.

Jameco
All Electronics - Another fantastic supplier. More of a surplus house, although a good many of their products are always available. All Electronics
Metal Spermarkets - Supplier of metals in small quantities. Very artist friendly. Metal Supermarkets
Herbach & Rademan - I can hardly describe this place...just go to the site...but set a hard spending limit before clicking the link because you'll want to buy two of everything. I'm not kidding. Herbach and Rademan
Parallax, Inc - the folks who brought us the Basic Stamp series of microcontrollers. They carry a lot of other great stuff as well. Parallax
Weird Stuff - Surplus house in Sunnyvale, California. Well worth a visit when in the area. Weirdstuff
Halted Specialties - Another great supplier in the South Bay. More geared towards electronic components than Weird Stuff. HSC - Halted Specialties/
Mondotronics Robot Store - Great resourcee for robotic books, kits, parts, supplies, art, etc. And we all know robot parts can be put to great use in kinetic art! Mondotronics Robot Store
Michael's Arts & Crafts - All over the place Michael's Arts & Crafts
Mike Quinn Electronics-401 McCormick St, San Leandro, CA - Chaos reigns at Quinn's, but we wouldn't have it any other way! 510-569-1539
